On Sunday 27th April, at the Spen Valley District St George’s Day Celebration, we proudly honoured David Bentley, Scout Leader at 11th Spen Valley (Hunsworth) Scout Group, with The Scouts’ prestigious 60 Years Long Service Award.

David’s journey through Scouting is nothing short of extraordinary. He first joined the 11th Spen Valley as an 8-year-old Cub in 1954, later becoming a leader in December 1964. By July 1967, David had stepped into the role of Scout Leader — a position he has held continuously for almost six decades.

Throughout his time with Spen Valley, David has inspired countless young people, led thousands of hours of outdoor adventures, and played a critical role in fundraising efforts and the group’s operations. His influence extends far beyond his troop — David also supports fellow volunteers through his work on the Spen Valley District Team.

David’s lifelong service has previously been recognised nationally, when he was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in 2016 as part of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday Honours List.

During the ceremony, David received tributes from across Scouting:

Chief Scout Dwayne Fields said:
“David’s tireless dedication to his group, his community, and to Scouting as a whole is nothing short of inspirational. Sixty years of service is a remarkable achievement, but it’s the impact he’s had on young people – and the volunteers he’s supported – that truly defines his legacy. On behalf of the entire Scouting family – thank you, David.”

David Sowden, District Volunteer, added:
“David has been the steady heartbeat of 11th Spen Valley for decades. His dedication, kindness, and willingness to support others has helped shape not just a Scout group, but a whole community. He’s a quiet hero, and we are all proud to celebrate this milestone with him.”

Ian Womersley, Lead Volunteer for West Yorkshire Scouts, said:
“It’s hard to put into words what it means to give 60 years of your life to others — and to still be making a difference today. David is a shining example of Scouting values in action, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything he’s done for young people across West Yorkshire.”

The District St George’s Day event was a fitting backdrop for this presentation, bringing together hundreds of young people and volunteers to renew their promises, celebrate service, and reflect on the values of Scouting.

David’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact that one individual can have. On behalf of everyone in Spen Valley, West Yorkshire, and across the Scouting community, thank you, David.
